Moving Totes vs U-Haul Boxes in Daytona Beach: Price, Pickup and Hassle
Short answer: U-Haul sells cardboard boxes from $1.39 each in bundles (as of Oct 2026), but you still buy tape, build and seal every box, haul it home, and get rid of the pile afterward. Rented totes arrive at your door ready to pack, snap shut, stack evenly, and we pick up the empties at your new place.
U-Haul is the first name most people in Volusia County think of for boxes. You can grab cardboard where you pick up your truck, and U-Haul publishes its prices online. That makes it a fair, easy benchmark.
This page lays out U-Haul's published box and kit prices, where to buy them locally, and what U-Haul's own plastic box rental looks like. Then it compares both options honestly, including the cases where U-Haul cardboard is the smarter pick.

How much are U-Haul boxes? (Daytona Beach rates)
U-Haul prices boxes nationally on uhaul.com. The cheapest per-box price comes from buying a bundle online for in-store pickup. Bundles are one size only; you can't mix sizes.
All of the standard boxes below are rated to hold up to 65 lb and have a 32 ECT (edge crush test) rating. Prices are as of Oct 2026 and don't include sales tax.
| Box | Size (inches) | Single price | Lowest price (bundle) |
|---|---|---|---|

Does U-Haul sell moving box kits?
Yes. The Easy Pak Moving Box Kit is listed at $69.95 as of Oct 2026. U-Haul describes it as sized for a studio or one-bedroom apartment.
U-Haul also sells a Dish Saver Kit for $14.95. It includes one Dishsaver Glass Pack Box, a five-piece cell divider and 32 foam pouches, enough for up to 8 place settings. U-Haul links to larger household and apartment kits too, but their prices weren't shown on the page we checked.
Does U-Haul rent plastic moving totes?
U-Haul has a plastic box rental called the Ready-To-Go Box. Each one is 24 x 20 x 12 inches with 2.4 cubic feet of space. They're made of water-resistant high-density polyethylene, with lids and handles, and rent week to week.
The program launched in 2017 at company stores in California and Arizona. U-Haul's 2023 blog post says it's offered in multiple U.S. and Canadian cities, but it publishes no rental rates. You pick the boxes up and return them yourself.
Neither the Daytona Beach store page nor the Ormond Beach dealer page we checked mentions the Ready-To-Go Box. If you want U-Haul plastic boxes, call the Speedway Blvd store to ask whether any nearby location carries them.
Is it cheaper to buy U-Haul boxes or rent moving totes?
Per container, cardboard looks cheaper. Our totes are 27 gallons, about 3.6 cubic feet each, so 40 totes hold roughly 144 cubic feet. Matching that with U-Haul large boxes takes about 32 boxes, around $79 at the bundle price.
That number leaves a lot out. You also need tape and a dispenser, markers, a box knife and a trip to the store, and the Easy Pak kit alone is $69.95 for a studio. Then every box has to be built, taped and labeled.
After the move, cardboard becomes a chore: flattening dozens of boxes and fitting them into recycling over several weeks. Totes skip all of it, because we take the empties away.
So compare your whole move, not one box. For a local move finished within a week or two, totes usually save hours and a pile of trash for a similar total.
| U-Haul cardboard boxes | Rented 27-gallon totes | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost per container | $1.39 to $3.49 (bundle prices) | Higher per container; sold as weekly packages |
| Tape and assembly | Needed for every box | None; lids snap on |
| Getting them | Pick up at a U-Haul store or dealer | Delivered to your door |
| After the move | You flatten, store or dispose of them | Empties picked up at your new home |
| Unused extras | 100% buy-back if unused, with receipt | Returned with the rest |
| Water and humidity | Cardboard can soften when wet | Plastic is water-resistant |
| Odd shapes (lamps, TVs, mirrors) | Specialty boxes available | Don't fit; use specialty boxes |
| Keep for long-term storage | Yes, they're yours | No; totes are rented by the week |
When are U-Haul boxes the better choice?
To be fair, cardboard is the right tool for a few kinds of moves.

When do rented totes make more sense?
Totes fit best for local moves inside our area, finished within a week or two. They suit busy households, condo moves with elevators and tight hallways, and anyone who hates taping boxes. Uniform totes with lids also stack evenly in a truck, and plastic shrugs off a wet driveway better than cardboard.
Daytona Moving Bins Co. drops clean totes at your door and picks up the empty totes at your new place. We don't move furniture or loaded totes; you or your helpers do the moving. If that matches your plan, see how it works or find the right package size.

Questions people ask
How much is a U-Haul moving box?
As of Oct 2026, U-Haul lists small boxes at $1.77 each, or $1.39 in a 25-box bundle. Large boxes are $2.87 each, or $2.48 in a 15-box bundle. Prices are before tax.
Does U-Haul buy back unused boxes?
Yes. U-Haul offers a 100% buy-back on unused boxes when you bring your receipt. Return them to a company-owned store, such as the one at 700 W International Speedway Blvd, to avoid confusion.
Is there a U-Haul in Ormond Beach?
U-Haul lists Safe Ship Halifax at 3762 Roscommon Dr as a Neighborhood Dealer with trucks, trailers and moving supplies. The nearest company-owned U-Haul store is on W International Speedway Blvd in Daytona Beach.
Can I rent plastic boxes from U-Haul in Daytona Beach?
U-Haul rents plastic Ready-To-Go Boxes in some cities, but the Daytona and Ormond location pages we checked don't mention them. Call the Daytona store to ask about availability. You'd pick them up and return them yourself.
How big is a U-Haul large box compared with a 27-gallon tote?
A U-Haul large box is 18 x 18 x 24 inches, or 4.5 cubic feet. A 27-gallon tote holds about 3.6 cubic feet. So a large box holds more, while the tote needs no tape and its lid snaps shut.
Is it cheaper to buy moving boxes at U-Haul or Home Depot?
Prices change often, so compare both stores' websites the week you buy. At U-Haul, the lowest prices come from bundles ordered online for in-store pickup. Count tape and specialty boxes too, not just the box price.
What size U-Haul box should I use for books?
Use small boxes for books and other heavy items. U-Haul's small box is 1.5 cubic feet and rated to 65 lb, so it stays liftable when full.
