Downsizing in Daytona Beach: A Tote-by-Tote Plan for Seniors and Their Families

Short answer: Measure the new home first, then sort one room at a time into keep, family, donate and sell. Local drop-offs include Goodwill on W. Granada Blvd. in Ormond Beach, the Habitat ReStore on S. Nova Rd. in Port Orange and the Salvation Army store on Ridgewood Ave. in Holly Hill. Keep every packed tote well under 50 pounds.

Downsizing after decades in one home is a big job, and it is also a personal one. Whether you are moving to a smaller house, a 55+ community or assisted living, the goal is the same. You want to bring what matters, fit it into the new space, and pass the rest on with care.

This plan works for the person moving and for the family helping. It covers sorting, Volusia County donation options and local aging services. It also covers senior move managers and how to pack safely.

Researched and checked October 28, 2026. Prices and rules change, so confirm with the source before you rely on them.

Where do you start when downsizing a home?

Start with the new home, not the old one. Get a floor plan or measure each room, closet and wall. Then list the furniture that will actually fit, such as the bed, a favorite chair and one dresser. Everything else is decided against that list.

Next, set a pace you can keep. Two or three hours a day is plenty for most people. Begin with a low-emotion space like a linen closet or garage, so the process feels manageable before you reach photos and keepsakes.

How do you sort belongings into keep, family, donate and sell?

Use four clearly labeled zones or totes in each room. Decide each item once, and move it to its zone right away. Undecided items get one tote per room, which you revisit at the end of the week.

Ask family early which items they want, and set a pickup date. Items no one claims by that date move to donate or sell. This keeps the home from becoming a storage unit for relatives.

What is a good room-by-room downsizing plan?

Work through the home in this order. Each step clears space for the next one and leaves the hardest decisions until you have momentum.

Where can you donate furniture and household items in Volusia County?

Each charity has its own rules, so check before you load the car. Here is what their published pages say, as of Oct 2026.

Goodwill Industries of Central Florida opened a Donation Xpress center at 1425 W. Granada Blvd. in Ormond Beach, where staff meet donors at their vehicles. Goodwill accepts clothing, furniture in good condition, kitchen items, working small appliances and electronics, and tools with the gas removed. It does not accept mattresses, box springs, bed frames, large appliances, TVs, cribs, medicine or chemicals. It offers donation pickup through a partnership with ReSupply.

The Habitat for Humanity of Greater Volusia County ReStore is at 3813 S. Nova Rd., Unit 103, in Port Orange. ReStores generally take furniture, appliances, cabinets, lighting, doors, tools and flooring in reusable condition. Habitat says many ReStores offer pickup for larger items, but not all, so call the store first.

The Salvation Army's Daytona thrift store is at 1415 Ridgewood Ave. in Holly Hill. It takes gently used clothing, furniture, appliances and household items at the store, and you can schedule a pickup online.

What do you do with old paint, chemicals and medicine?

Charities will not take them, but Volusia County will. Paint, chemicals, gasoline, pool chemicals, sharps and batteries can go to the Tomoka Landfill at 1990 Tomoka Farms Road in Port Orange. They can also go to the West Volusia Transfer Station at 3151 E. New York Ave. in DeLand.

For unused or expired prescriptions, the Volusia Sheriff's Office runs an ongoing take-back program at its district offices. The county also holds household hazardous waste collection events, usually in November and April.

What senior relocation resources are available in Volusia County?

The Council on Aging of Volusia County is based at 420 Fentress Blvd. in Daytona Beach. Its services include senior center activities, meal delivery, reassurance phone calls, in-home care, respite care and guardianship. Some services are free or low-cost for eligible seniors, and others are private pay.

For help finding other services, the statewide Elder Helpline run by Florida's elder affairs agency is 1-800-963-5337. It is a good first call when you are not sure which local program fits.

Should you hire a senior move manager?

A senior move manager helps sort and organize, arranges for unwanted items to be sold or donated, and supervises packing and unpacking. AARP notes that a neutral third party lets family focus on emotional support while the manager handles logistics.

AARP cites a NASMM survey putting typical rates at about $60 to $120 per hour. The National Association of Specialty and Senior Move Managers has a directory you can search by ZIP code within 50 miles. Only NASMM members may use the title Senior Move Manager, and NASMM still advises you to confirm a manager's insurance.

Ask what the contract covers, how billing works, and who is in the manager's network of movers and buyers. A move manager is often the better choice when family lives far away or the home is very full.

How do you plan for a smaller room in a 55+ community or assisted living?

Ask the community for the exact room dimensions and a floor plan, then sketch where each piece goes. Leave clear walking paths, especially around the bed and bathroom door. A recliner, a small table and a dresser often fill a studio faster than people expect.

In Florida, assisted living residents must be offered the option to use their own belongings as space permits. If the facility supplies furniture, each room must include a bed, closet or wardrobe space, a dresser, a nightstand, a lamp and a wastebasket. Ask what is already provided before you move duplicates.

How heavy should a packed moving tote be?

Keep every tote under 50 pounds, and lighter is better. The NIOSH lifting equation starts from a load constant of 23 kg, about 51 pounds, under ideal conditions. Reaching, twisting or lifting from the floor lowers the safe limit.

Put books, files and dishes in the bottom half of a tote and fill the top with linens. Use a dolly instead of carrying stacks. Let younger helpers or hired movers handle stairs and furniture, and take breaks in the Florida heat.

When do rental totes make sense for downsizing, and when don't they?

Totes help most when you are sorting. Labeled totes for keep, family and donate make each decision visible, and lids keep things clean while they wait. We deliver them, and after the move we pick up the empty totes at the new address, so no cardboard is left behind.

They make less sense if a move manager is packing with their own supplies, or if most items are going straight to donation. In that case, a few totes for keepsakes and paperwork may be all you need. We do not move furniture or loaded totes, so you will still need movers or family for the heavy lifting.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to downsize a home?

It depends on the size of the home and how many decisions are involved. Many families need several weeks at a steady pace of a few hours a day. Starting with low-emotion spaces helps the process move faster later.

Does Goodwill take mattresses in Volusia County?

No. Goodwill Industries of Central Florida does not accept mattresses, box springs or bed frames. It also turns away large appliances and TVs.

How much does a senior move manager cost?

AARP cites a NASMM survey putting rates at about $60 to $120 per hour. Some managers bill by project instead. Get the scope and billing method in writing.

Can family members help with the move into assisted living?

Yes, and their help is often the most valuable part. Ask the community about move-in hours, elevator access and parking before the day. Assign one person to set up the bed and bathroom first.

How many totes does a downsizing move need?

It depends on what you keep, not what you own today. A move into a one-bedroom or assisted living room often needs far fewer totes than the old home suggests. Our tote calculator can help you estimate.
